THE SHIELD
First off, let's get the shield out of the way so that we can tackle the figure itself later. For the front of the shield we're going to give it a nice bone look with and add in some steel NMM (non-metal metallics) style painting for the decoration. The bone was an easy choice since it will help tie in to the look that I'm going for.

Ok, here we have the primed shield. Mixing up a base coat of Stained Ivory at 2:1 (paint:water) I laid down a base coat. If the paint is a little thick, just add a bit to the palette by dipping the end of your brush into some clean water and stirring in a bit more. It may take 2-3 coats to lay down the color, but you want SMOOTH on the base coat. Any errors will just get magnified as you add more layers later on.

With the base coat down, I next made a 50/50 mix of Stained Ivory and Yellowed Bone at the 2:1 ratio. I did go over about 90% of base coat, and again, it took about 2 coats to even out the coloration. Next came just the straight Yellowed Bone at 2:1. Now I started to pull in from the edges to the center of the shield for the middle sections and just the outside edges working upwards... Remember your paint stroke should go from dark to light if that is the layer you're adding. Don't work from light to dark as it won't look correct when you're finished.

Next Iayer was a 50/50 mix of Yellowed Bone and Creamy Ivory thinned at 2:1. I mainly worked the edges of the shield and in the middle section started drawing more into the center. Next, just a 2:1 layer of Creamy Ivory and stayed at about the 10% of the middle section and ONLY hit the very edges (literally) of the shield.

Last, I took a 1:1 layer of Linen White and went to just the middle and the top edges of the shield to paint on the color. Now, I seal it with Dull Coat to protect the work already done.
